1st gig new tour...nice food...nice audience....nice light...great new sound...great BANG!
|
We were healthily nervous before our first gig in Emmen De Muzeval, not too much not too little. We had a lovely meal prepared by our super crew who can do lights, general tech and cooking.
The first half went off without a hitch even though Philip had only just come back from holidays and some of the songs are brand new, we were doing well and enjoying ourselves. We got a hand from the audience even before we'd played anything, which is always a good start. We started the second half and got through the first 4 numbers alright.
Now...there's something you need to know before I go on. When we were trying out light and sound in Hoogezand, Hans, our soundguy found out about a really good soundpanel which he immediately bought to have on tour with us. He's dedicated like that. To be sure he ran the thing for a good few hours with no problem. The recordings he made with it sounded like a well mixed album.
Which is why we were so thoroughly shocked when halfway through the 4th number there was a snap and a bang...and the soundpanel died...flatlined...expired..in short, dead silence! There was a smattering of light around the heads of our technicians and a great bustle of feet from the theater-house crew who was running to help. What to do? We quickly conferred and heartened by our faithful audience, decided to carry on acoustically.
Strangely, this all happened right at the point of us starting our new song Ballisodare bay which is in remembrance of our friend Tom Carey who passed away earlier this year. We took our new electric candles which our crew got us for pacifying hypnotic puposes and put them on the front of the stage.
The audience promised not to breathe and off we went. I'd give anything to be able to tell Tom about it, it was one of those special moments we'll never forget...
The sound came back on for our last two songs and we finished off grandly thanks to our own great crew and the good people of De Muzeval theater. The first gig of the new tour and the magic is there like it never left us, we're on our way... :-)
