Remembering Tom Carey
|
Remember when I told you about the mad night we had in Walshes in the story : "808 miles to bliss"? The man we met there, Tom Carey, the concertina player from Cree had been very ill these last few years but was holding up like a champion and was out playing almost every night. He even went to Vegas last year when he won the national lottery. Just before he went he had hip surgery which he seemed to see as a minor distraction from doing what he loved. Playing music and meeting friends.
Last Wednesday, one of the first beautiful spring days of this year, Tom Carey had to give in to the illness he battled so amazingly. He died in the morning, at home, surrounded by friends. Dear Trisha, and Mary Clarke our friends in Kilrush phoned and emailed us to let us know what was happening. There was a tribute to Tom on ClareFM and his funeral on Thursday was attended by many of his friends. We sorely regret we could not be there, but Tom has always been in our hearts and always will be.
Our next album will be called A ditch near Cree. Even now that we wish we could have put it in his own hands when it's finished, Tom will be remembered in the music. We will miss him.
